Food packaging and labelling in Germany

International food brands should review packaging content and operational data before market entry. Incomplete or inconsistent information can delay buyer processes.

Typical information for prepacked food

  • Name of the food and ingredient list
  • Clearly emphasised allergens
  • Net quantity and best-before or use-by date
  • Storage and usage instructions where required
  • Name and address of the responsible food business operator
  • Nutrition declaration and, where applicable, origin or product-specific information

Language, legibility and claims

Mandatory information must be visible, legible and understandable to consumers in Germany. Marketing, health and nutrition claims require product-specific review.

Retail and logistics data

Retail readiness also covers EAN/GTIN, lot and traceability information, case count, dimensions, weight, palletisation, remaining shelf life on delivery and storage conditions.

Packaging obligations

Responsibilities for registration, system participation and other packaging obligations must be clarified before distribution. The exact setup depends on the product and route-to-market.

Practical pre-buyer check

  • Packaging and product data sheet match completely
  • Allergens, ingredients, nutrition and claims are reviewed
  • German copy is correct and sufficiently legible
  • EAN, shelf life, case and pallet data are available

This guide is practical orientation, not legal advice. Product-specific legal review is required before market launch.

Next step: prepare listing documents and buyer outreach.
